Bacolaodiat:  Chinese New Year Celebration

Kung Hei Fat Choi! It’s Chinese New Year once again. Go out to the streets and feel the festive mood, enjoy the beat of the dragon dance and prepare the traditional (Ang-pau or Hong Bao) red envelopes!

What do you like most about this occasion?  For me, I have always been fascinated about how the Chinese celebrate their festivities and preserve their culture. Chinese New Year, like most holidays, brings families closer and provides an occasion to build relationships with other people through different activities that each one of us would love to get into. Food, dragon dance, colorful displays/decors and fireworks complete the experience.

In Bacolod, Chinese New Year is being celebrated with a bang through the annual Bacolaodiat festival. Lacson Street and the Capitol Lagoon area (known as the party strip) are again loaded with activities with kick-off starting yesterday and will last until Monday, Febuary 18.

In SM City Bacolod, Chinese New Year is signaled by the putting up of a giant-size dog ornament and Chinese lanterns and decorations. This is also a busy time for food entrepreneurs to showcase their specialties and other Chinese delicacies. Lucky charms in different images and colors are being sold and when you have pieces of lucky gold coins, you may tell the lady in charge to have it cleansed.

So, enjoy celebrating Bacolaodiat in the City of Smiles.

Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
