Rey Valera & Nonoy Zuniga

Back to Back Concert

For those belonging to Generation X (born in the 70s and 80s), hits of OPM icons Nonoy Zuniga and Rey Valera are timeless. Coming from this age group, these are the songs I grew up listening to as it was the height of OPM’s popularity back then.

GLOW: A back to Back Concert Negrenses would love to listen….

So, when I was told that the two OPM icons will have a concert in Bacolod, I went off to the meet and greet event with my co-blogger/ friend Sigrid Lo (Sigrid Says blog site).

The media event for Glow: Rey Valera & Nonoy Zuniga Back to Back Concert was held last November 20, 2017 at one of the function rooms of the newly opened Seda Hotel Capitol Central. It was only Nonoy Zuniga who graced the affair for the Bacolod press.

Nonoy Zuniga Hits…

Doon Lang, Kamusta Ka, Love Without Time, I’ll Never Say Goodbye—these are some of Nonoy’s classics.

Whenever his songs are played on air, I smile and think of how simple the message of the songs are, yet it has never failed to touch the sentimentality of many Filipinos.

His songs were also sung by other artists and even became theme songs of quite a number of movies. Of course, one theme song that was a record-breaker in  the airwaves that time was Kamusta Ka –the duet version of the late Fernando Poe Jr. and Megastar Sharon Cuneta  in the 90s mega-blockbuster movie Minsan Pa.

Looking Back…

His singing career started and flourished in the early 80’s.  He made a movie with no less than the Star for All Seasons Ms. Vilma Santos and also collaborated with top composers and singers in the country. To this day, Nonoy Zuniga remains one of the bankable singers of his time.

Even when other genre would take over the music scene such as hip hop, R & B, and rap still OPM classics like Nonoy’s hits are the top requests from the listening audience in radio, sing along and videoke bars.  He is still visible doing shows in Manila and in other parts of the country and still does shows abroad with other performers for our kababayans who miss OPM songs.

Longevity and Legacy

Spanning almost four decades in the industry, Nonoy has established his staying power and will surely leave a legacy to the younger generation of singers. He said he’s happy that his songs are sung in videoke sessions and parties but for Nonoy, he’d rather interpret a song than compose one.

With gold record hits, OPM requested songs and endless classics, Nonoy Zuniga still wants to do something new in his career. “I’m thinking of making an all- Christian songs album or all-Cebuano songs album…’yung mga hindi ko pa nagawa, puwede ko pa ring gawin ngayon.”

If he’s not busy in Manila with his singing engagements, Nonoy spends time in Cebu where he opened a vegan restaurant and a derma clinic. Not known to many, Nonoy is a doctor by profession.

Cebu’s pride Jolianne Salvado will join the two music greats in rendering heart-warming songs for the Negrenses.
